In Ethiopia religion has a strong impact on family life, education and morality. In Ethiopia they have 4 major religions; Christianity Islam, Animism and Judaism. Ethiopian Christians trace their roots back to two Syrian Christians who arrived in the fourth century A.D. For over 700 years, until 1974, the Ethiopian orthodox church was the official church for Ethiopia. About 30% of Ethiopia's population is Ethiopian Orthodox Christian other types of Christianity cover 8% of Ethiopia's population. Islam first reached Ethiopia in the seventh century, about 40% of Ethiopia's population is Muslim. the city Harar has been home to most Muslims for thousands of years. Animism is the belief that natural objects have spirits, which has a big impact on normal day life. About 12% of Ethiopia's population is animism. Ethiopian Jews are possibly the oldest religion in Ethiopia. |
